When all is said and done, can we all say that we didn’t do something that hurt another? Doctors have to take a Hippocratic Oath, why shouldn’t the rest of us take the equivalent to it? True, there are cases in which the hurt we cause is entirely unintentional; but if we treated others as if it were our duty to be the best version of ourselves, don’t you think the human race would be far less dismal? I’m not trying to get up on my soapbox because I know I’m not perfect and have left my own pile of casualties, but I’m reminded of all the sayings that are to keep us in line in our dealings with each other: “what you reap is what you sow”, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. Don’t think that you can just do what you want and everyone else be damned. It comes back usually when you least expect it. So how about this? Let’s do a virtual pinky swear and oath to be the best versions of ourselves that we can. Who knows, we might benefit as much if not more than those we endeavor to treat better.
